The problem is we are running out of viable land to build more landfills. With the cost of land and environmental studies and regulations, it is becoming difficult to build new landfills. The solution is and has always been, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The problem with this is the cost of separation, and today municipalities all over the country are getting involved.

In many communities, collection is been divided into three categories, Putrescible, Metal and Plastic & Paper.

Putrescible, waste is all of the food, organic and spoilable mater that cannot be recycled. This part of the waste stream is put into the landfill directly from the collection truck. As people become aware of the amount food waste they are discarding, the urge to reduce the amount will grow. Cities are charging more for the disposal of such waste, which has reduced the flow.
Metal, Recycling tin, metal cans and aluminum has been met with great success, given the increase in the market price of recyclable metals. Aluminum and scrap iron from food & drink can has emerged to become an industry itself, with entrepreneurs picking up cans along roadsides, parks and walkways.
Paper & Plastic Like the metal recycling industry paper and plastic has seen its growth over the last decade. With HDPE, LDPE plastic recovery centers popping up virtually overnight paying top dollar for these two types of plastics. Paper recycling has also been around for decades and cardboard in coming into its own with and annual increase in volume for over 20 years.

The work is not done by no means. However, conservation is gaining momentum. People are looking for ways to protect the environment we live in and reduce our effect on it. Given the current social climate and the current economy, people are looking to save every dollar possible. A good start is to reduce the waste stream by recycling where possible and reusing what we can.

After all, this is the only place we have to live.

Money Concerns and Where’s the Check

Today I have been working, attending meetings in Little Rock. My drive to the big city is about an hour and I was worrying about the everyday things you know the mortgage, insurance payments and the fact my truck needs news tires. I know I am not alone and I realize that people are scared. My meeting was about more work and yet the last project has not been paid. The professional I am I never asked or even mentioned they owed me money, that will not change but it got me to thinking.

When I got, back to the office there it was on my desk. Several letters, one of which asking for a bid on another project. The check from the client I had just met earlier in the day. This will currently help I thought, and it reminded me that I approach life with an attitude of FAITH. Therefore, it was a great feeling to know no matter what happens things do seem to work out. When the bill collectors are calling, remember they are just doing the same things as you, their Jobs. The economy is definitely slowing and that means money as well. If you are a little late just remember you are not alone.
